Charleston, WV (HNN) — The West Virginia Aeronautics Commission distributed nearly $17 million in federal and state grants to airports throughout the state during its quarterly meeting today in Cabell County.
Twenty-seven grants in total were awarded to 17 of the state’s airports. The Greenbrier Valley Airport was the largest grant recipient, receiving $5.39 million for various renovations including runway improvements. Other grant projects that were provided funding include Yeager Airport for $4.4 million; Wheeling-Ohio County Airport for $3.2 million; and Tri-State Airport will receive $2.4 million. (A complete list of projects is attached)
Transportation Secretary Paul Mattox, who serves on the Aeronautics Commission board, stated, “Adequate funding of our airport system is fundamental to the success of the State of West Virginia in so many respects. This continued level of funding not only allows our airports to compete on a national scale; it allows our airport communities to prosper as our airports grow.”
The grants are a continued 5 percent match of the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) 95 percent funding. Last year, the West Virginia Aeronautics Commission increased state matching funds from 2.5 to 5 percent toward airports that received a new grant from the FAA AIP Program during April 2009 through June 30, 2010.
In the motion passed by the Commission at their April meeting, the increased level of funding has been extended from July, 2010 to June 30, 2011.
