Honk Your Horn for World Alzheimer's Day on Tuesday
Special to Huntingtonnews.net
Charleston, WV (HNN) - The Alzheimer’s Association, West Virginia Chapter is urging all West Virginians to GO PURPLE WITH A PURPOSE for World Alzheimer’s Day, Tuesday, Sept. 21.
Volunteers and staff members will wave large signs urging drivers to “HONK to STOP Alzheimer’s” from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and again from 4:15 until 5:30 p.m.
The Tim Horton’s in Teays Valley and Jolly Pirate Donuts in Huntington (4526 Route and 110 5th Ave.) will sell purple sprinkled donuts to mark the occasion.
With the recent release of rising Alzheimer’s disease statistics, World Alzheimer’s Day is an ideal time to educate the public and rally around the cause.
Alzheimer's disease is fast becoming the country's broadest and most expensive problem for individuals, families and the health care system, with nearly 100,000 caregivers in West Virginia and more than 48,000 individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in the state. And for the past seven years, each dollar the U.S. government spends on the costs of Alzheimer care, it invests less than one cent in research to find a cure or treatments.
“Alzheimer’s disease is not just a little memory loss in older people. It is a crisis that grows worse every day. It poses a threat to all of us and drives up health care costs tremendously. We must mobilize,” said Jane Marks, executive director of the West Virginia Chapter.
"The Alzheimer's Association, West Virginia Chapter is leading the fight to end this crisis and offers help to families dealing with this disease everyday," said Laurel Kirksey, development director of the West Virginia Chapter.
To help us raise funds and awareness about this disease, join us at the Charleston Memory Walk on October 30 at Appalachian Power Park. Visit our website to register or find other opportunities in your area.
The Alzheimer's Association, West Virginia Chapter is the only voluntary health organization in West Virginia dedicated to providing support, education, outreach and advocacy for individuals with Alzheimer's disease, their families, caregivers and communities.
