Judge to speak to students to celebrate Constitution Day

From a WV Supreme Court of Appeals Release

Princeton, WV (HNN) - Ninth Judicial Circuit (Mercer County) Judge Omar Aboulhosn spoke to students at Montcalm Elementary School on September 16, in recognition of Constitution Day.

Judge Aboulhosn told students about the right to a jury trial, the right to remain silent, the right to counsel, the right to due process, and the separation of powers between the three branches of government.

In October, Judge Aboulhosn will be a mentor to the Montcalm sixth-graders, something he has done at the school for thirteen years. He will read to the students weekly and be involved in various class activities throughout the school year. At the end of the school year, Judge Aboulhosn will take the students on a tour of the Southern Regional Jail in Beaver.

Last November, the Mercer County Board of Education agreed to expand Judge Aboulhosn’s mentoring program to other sixth-grade students in the county. With the help of members of Generation GAP (Gathering Area Professionals), sixth-graders at Bluefield Middle School and Athens School also will be mentored starting in October. Generation GAP is a young professional organization that is part of Generation West Virginia. Judge Aboulhosn said the purpose of the program is to mentor these students and instill in them the importance of education, staying off drugs, and getting a post-high school education.

The U.S. Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787
