Non-Profit Groups May Now Apply Directly to the WV DMV For Special License Plates
House Bill 4172 transfers the authority to approve Class A and G special plates for non-profits from the Legislature to DMV
Special to Huntingtonnews.net Charleston, WV (HNN) - The West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles is now accepting applications from non-profit organizations who wish to work with DMV for a specially designed plate. House Bill 4172 allows the DMV to approve special plates, as long as certain criteria are met.
Non-profit organizations must have IRS 501(c) 3 status and be based or have a chapter in West Virginia. Eligible organizations may include but are not limited to groups with social, civic, higher education, or entertainment purposes. The organization may not be a political party, and may not have been created or in existence primarily to promote a specific political or social belief.
The first step for any non-profit organization wishing to obtain a special license plate is to apply to the WV DMV with sufficient information for the DMV to make a determination that the organization meets the nonprofit status and other criteria. After receiving approval from the DMV, the organization will need to collect at least 250 applications. DMV may not begin production until the organization has collected at least 250 applications and full year fees at $70 per application.
For a non-profit organization application, please visit the DMV website at www.dmv.wv.gov. Additionally, you may contact the Special Plates section of the WV DMV at 304-558-4269.
For media inquiries, please contact Steve Dale with the WV DMV at 304-558-2723.
