Beckley, WV (HNN) – U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall (W.Va.) offered his congratulations to Chef and Producer Jamie Oliver for his work on “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution” which was filmed in Huntington and focused on working to encourage the community to eat and cook healthier foods through the Cabell County School District, a community kitchen, and by working with families one-on-one.

“Jamie Oliver and his team have done great work here in Cabell County,” said Rahall. “Encouraging healthy eating habits and using fresh fruits and vegetables and less processed foods in our schools and homes is a positive step for the health of our kids, communities, and state. I offer my sincere congratulations to Jamie and wish him the best of luck at the Emmys in August.”

Working with Oliver, Cabell County School District officials have placed an extra emphasis on improving overall student health through dietary changes.

Rahall, to support the efforts begun by “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution,” was successful in getting the USDA and the West Virginia Office of Child Nutrition to work with Cabell Schools to address changes made to their school’s nutrition program and ensure that they have the information and technical assistance they need to offer nutritious meals that comply with dietary standards. Rahall also asked the USDA to consider highlighting Cabell County Schools as a national model and an innovative demonstration program in the upcoming reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act.

Rahall is also currently drafting legislation that would create a grant program for school districts, like Cabell County, that seek to improve the health of their students by implementing a nutrition program that provides healthier, less processed foods to their students.

“If federal funds can provide the funding boost school districts need to provide healthier foods, I want to make sure we can set aside those funds to encourage these great initiatives. Studies show a healthier diet promotes the physical well being and academic development of our young people,” said Rahall. “I believe in the program’s potential to pave the way to more nutritious menus in our schools, across W.Va. and the nation.”

West Virginia has been at the forefront of efforts to improve school nutrition for the past five years. It was the first state to implement many of the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine, which exceed the current national standards for school nutrition. The State of West Virginia has also removed all a la carte items from school menus; provides universal breakfast; and, has increased the amount of whole grains and vegetables served to students each week.

“I applaud Jamie Oliver and the Cabell County School Board, faculty and staff for the great work they have done over the past five years, and the additional work they have taken on since Jamie began his show in Huntington last year. I am also very pleased that the USDA has agreed to provide assistance on this initiative to ensure that the Cabell County school nutrition program meets all federal nutrition guidelines and is not penalized for its innovative approach,” said Rahall.
