Charleston, WV (HNN) - The Kanawha-Charleston Health Department (KCHD) has been recognized by the National Association of County & City Health Officials (NACCHO) for two promising practices in public health. NACCHO is the national organization representing local health departments across the nation. NACCHO recognized KCHD’s School Vaccination Clinics for H1N1 influenza and Clean Indoor Air Regulation Social Marketing Campaign. The programs were reviewed nationally by peers and recognized as collaborative, innovative and responsive initiatives which improve health outcomes. Both the programs were awarded the ‘promising practice’ status. Amongst all applicants, only forty-seven programs nationally were recognized.

KCHD successfully partnered with other community organizations including Cabin Creek Health Systems, Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority and City of Charleston Fire Department to hold school vaccination clinics for H1N1 in all public and private schools as well as multiple daycare and pre-school locations. Over 20,000 H1N1 vaccines were given during the 169 school located vaccination clinics.

The second promising practice recognized was the “Eat, Drink and Breathe Easy” social marketing campaign. KCHD partnered with the Kanawha Coalition for Community Health Improvement, American Lung Association and other partners to develop a thank you campaign for local businesses to highlight the economic benefits of being smoke free and promoting top of mind awareness of the negative health effects of second hand smoke while encouraging patronage and support of the smoke free establishments.

These practices demonstrate how local health departments such as KCHD and community partners can effectively collaborate to address local public health concerns. These practices are available online so other public health organizations across the nation can benefit from our experiences, to learn what works and to ensure resources are used wisely.
