Jesuit priest, author and editor Father James Martin, S.J. is the culture editor for the weekly national Catholic magazine, America.

His bestselling memoir “My Life with the Saints” received a 2007 Christopher Award, was named one of the "Best Books" of 2006 by Publishers Weekly, and also received a First Place award from the Catholic Press Association.

In fact, the book has sold over 100,000 copies. His equally popular book entitled: “A Jesuit Off-Broadway: Center Stage with Jesus, Judas and Life’s Big Questions,” was named one of Publishers Weekly’s “Best Books” of 2007 and was awarded a First Place award from the Catholic Press Association.

Father Martin’s latest book, “The Jesuit Guide to Almost Everything: A Spirituality for Real Life,” was published this past March.

Martin is also author of “Becoming Who You Are: Insights on the True Self from Thomas Merton and Other Saints;” “Searching for God at Ground Zero;” “In Good Company: The Fast Track from the Corporate World to Poverty,” “Chastity and Obedience;” and “This Our Exile: A Spiritual Journey with the Refugees of East Africa,” winner of a Catholic Press Association award.

His books are so popular that they’ve been translated into Spanish, German, Portuguese, Polish, Chinese and Korean. Besides books, Father Martin has written articles for major newspapers, magazines and Web sites.

He is a television and radio personality and has commented on religion in the national and international media, including National Public Radio's "Fresh Air with Terry Gross," NPR’s “Weekend Edition,” PBS’s “The Newshour with Jim Lehrer,” Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” and Fox News Channel's "The O'Reilly Factor," along with all the major television networks.

Father Martin also conducts retreats around the country, and assists on Sundays at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in New York City.

Martin
A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business, he worked for six years in corporate finance with General Electric Company, before entering the Society of Jesus.

He studied philosophy at Loyola University in Chicago and earned masters degrees in both divinity and theology from the Weston Jesuit School of Theology. He was ordained a priest in June 1999.

WJU alumnus Father Joseph Doyle ‘60 is renowned in the city of New Orleans and beloved by St. Augustine High School. A private, all-boys school with a history that dates back to 1951, St. Augustine provides a college bound education to an African-American student population. It led the way in battling school segregation in the South during its early years.

Father Doyle joined St. Augustine’s as president in 1992. His leadership has included many moments of challenge, but none greater than the catastrophic damage of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

When Katrina hit, Father Doyle jumped into action. He and the principal relocated the school, including SOME of its students to Breaux Bridge, La. Father Doyle’s worked with FEMA and the insurance companies to repair the school. Father Doyle came up with a way that St. Augustine students attended Xavier Prep and St. Mary’s Academy while their own school was being fixed.

St. Augustine students returned to campus on Aug. 14, 2006, less than one year after the storm hit, an amazing feat that reflects Father Doyle’s vision and hard work.

A Baltimore, Md. native, Father Doyle is a graduate of Wheeling College, class of 1960. He continued his studies at St. Joseph Seminary in Washington, DC and earned his master’s in Theology in 1970 and his doctorate in Ministry from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas in 1985.

He has been a member of the Society of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart since 1968 and is a Knight Commander of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher. He is also a past recipient of Wheeling Jesuit’s Distinguished Alumni Award 1993.
