Filmmaker B. J. Gudmundsson to Produce West Virginia Rosie Documentary
By Huntingtonnews.net Staff
Marlinton, WV (HNN) -- Award-winning West Virginia filmmaker B. J. Gudmundsson has been commissioned to produce the state’s first documentary film on “Rosie the Riveter.” The film is a project of Thanks! Plain and Simple, Inc., a non-profit organization based in Charleston. It is funded through a grant from the West Virginia Humanities Council.
West Virginia women were known to be superior workers in manufacturing and other jobs vacated by men during World War II. For a brief moment in their lives they took jobs doing badly needed men’s work and for the rest of their lives they focused on expressing hope and belief in people.
Now in their 80’s and 90’s, these West Virginia Rosies, bound by Thanks! Plain and Simple, are being reconnected to their communities. They will appear in a film that highlights their dedication to work in the context of their families, culture and belief in America. The documentary is scheduled for release in June 2011.
B. J. Gudmundsson was honored as West Virginia Filmmaker of the Year in 2005. She has produced 18 documentaries and numerous non-profit campaign videos. Her films “Out of the Storm” and “30 – Cal Price and The Pocahontas Times” received Best Documentary awards at the WV Filmmakers Festival. “Listen to the Women” and “Rise Up! West Virginia” received Awards of Excellence in 2008. Her work is available in public and university library collections across the United States.
Gudmundsson lives in Pocahontas County. She serves on several non-profit boards and is a member of the WV Filmmakers Guild.
B. J. Gudmundsson will be in Kanawha County on May 14 and 15 to film the West Virginia Rosie events in St. Albans and South Charleston where “Rosies” will meet and talk with the public. On May 16 she will present a program of her work for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation Discussion Group at 520 Kanawha Blvd. in Charleston.
