'Old Baldy' Now Nickname for Mountain State

Special to Huntingtonnews.net

Winners of the Nickname Contest have been announced. A new nickname has been selected in each of the following categories: overall state nickname, and athletic team nickname.

The overall winning nickname is “Old Baldy”. The judges felt the nickname, while keeping some of the flavor of our old state, now captures the new reality of much of the topography of West Virginia. The $100 prize goes to an 80-year-old St. Albans man.

The new nickname for West Virginia athletic teams is “The Draglines.” We picture a new costume for our mascot, a machine, with a tall boom growing out of the mascot’s head. The mascot could lead West Virginia’s football team onto the field in Dragline Stadium, where the team will try to devastate the opponent. The $100 prize goes to a woman in Morgantown.

The winners were selected from 171 entries. A number of people submitted anonymous admissions, for fear of harassment by the coal industry if their identities became known. For this reason also, we have decided to release the hometown of the winners, but not their names. This is itself a sad commentary on the situation in West Virginia today.

Contest judges Denise Giardina, Arla Ralston, and Jim Lewis, would like to thank everyone for their entries.
