Special to Huntingtonnews.net

Charleston, WV (HNN) -- The West Virginia Division of Culture and History’s annual exhibition, Quilts and Wall Hangings 2009, is on display in the Great Hall of the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston. The crowd-pleasing juried exhibition features 58 exquisite quilts and wall hangings representing the talents of West Virginia quilters. Quiltmaking is one of West Virginia’s oldest and most treasured art forms, and this annual display has become a tradition with visitors from all over the United States and abroad. The exhibit will be on display through Sept. 7.

Prizes were awarded in four categories: pieced quilts, appliqued quilts, mixed/other quilts and wall hangings. First- ($500), second- ($400), and third-place ($300) awards were given at the Saturday evening concert of the Vandalia Gathering, May 23. The Division also made two purchase awards, one quilt and one wall hanging, and the judge designated a Best of Show prize of $100. In addition, six non-monetary honorable mention distinctions were made. A complete list of exhibitors and winners is attached.

Anita Shackelford of Bucyrus, Ohio, served as judge for this year’s exhibition. She has been certified with the National Quilt Association (NQA) since 1982, and has been involved in judging shows at local, regional and national levels. She served four years on the NQA Board as membership chair. She also is charter member of the American Quilters Society and Museum of American Quilters Society.

Shackelford is the author of Three Dimensional Applique and Embroidery Embellishment: Techniques for Today’s Album Quilt; Anita Shackelford: Surface Textures; Applique with Folded Cutwork; Coxcomb Variations; and Infinite Feathers, published by American Quilter’s Society, plus a variety of books and tools under her own business name, Thimble Works. Her quilts have been exhibited in shows across the United States and in Australia, winning many awards including 12 Best of Shows and others for workmanship.

The Culture Center is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. The Archives Library closes at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and is closed on Sunday.
