Huntington, WV (HNN) — Marshall University head men's basketball coach Tom Herrion announced Thursday, April 22 that he has received permission to hire Bill Barton and Dino Presley as assistant coaches to his Thundering Herd staff.

"I am excited to have Bill join our basketball family at Marshall,” Herrion said. “Bill brings a wealth of experience having been a highly successful prep school coach and most recently he has been the associate head coach at Duquesne helping Ron Everhart rebuild that program. Bill's experience and work ethic will be a valuable addition to our program."

Barton arrives in Huntington after spending the past three seasons at Duquesne University including the last two as the associate head coach. A native of Boston, Mass., Barton played an instrumental role in the recruitment of Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team members Damian Saunders (2008) and Melquan Bolding (2009), helped Everhart land a 2008-09 recruiting class rated 28th in the nation by Hoop Scoop while firmly establishing himself as one of the top recruiters in the East.

Barton came to the Dukes’ program from Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Mass., where he led the basketball program to back-to-back Prep School National Championships in 2005-06 and 2006-07. Barton posted a 255-66 record in winning nearly 80 percent of his games against the top prep programs in the nation while at Notre Dame Prep.

Barton helped build Fitchburg into a powerhouse in his 10 seasons as head coach with over 70 of his former players - including former Duquesne players Shawn James, Kojo Mensah and Robert Mitchell and current Dukes’ player Damian Saunders - going on to play at the Division I level. Four of those players - Marcus Douthit (Providence College/2004 Los Angeles Lakers second round, 56th overall), Ryan Gomes (Providence College/2005 Boston Celtics second round, 50th overall) Will Blalock (Iowa State/2006 Detroit Pistons second round, 30th overall) and Michael Beasley (Kansas State/2008 Miami Heat first round, second overall) were drafted by NBA teams.

Some of the other prominent names who played for Barton include: Modibo Diarra (Memphis), Chester Frazier (Illinois), Paul Harris (Syracuse), Lazar Hayward (Marquette), Gary Ervin (Arkansas) and Carl Krauser (Pitt).

Barton, who completed his undergraduate degree in business at Salem State (Mass.) in 1989, added a master's in business administration from Suffolk University (Mass.) in 1991. Barton put those degrees to work at Notre Dame Prep, where he also served as the school principal and athletic director as well as an English teacher.

Barton and his wife, Susan, have two daughters, Maeve and Nell.

Presley comes to Marshall from St. Bonaventure where he was on the Bonnies’ staff for the past four years. For his recruiting prowess, Presley was recognized by Hoop Scoop as the 73rd-ranked assistant coach in the nation this past season.

"I have known Dino for a very long time and his experience will be a wonderful asset to the entire program,” Herron said. “He is a tireless worker who is very well respected by his peers. I'm excited to welcome Dino and his family to the Thundering Herd community."

Presley’s six-member 2008 recruiting class at St. Bonaventure was ranked in the top 50 by Hoop Scoop and 52nd by Hoopmasters.com columnist Van Coleman. That class helped the Bonnies make a major turnaround as St. Bonaventure broke a streak of six losing seasons by finishing with a 15-15 record that was highlighted by a school record seven-game road win streak and a trip back to the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Included in that group of players that helped turnaround the program in 2008-09 was guard Chris Matthews. Presley’s connections throughout college basketball helped the Bonnies land Matthews who was a transfer from Washington State. In his first season in the brown and white, Matthews finished with 81 three-pointers – the fourth-best total in single-season history.

Presley served as an assistant coach at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County during the 2005-06 season before heading to St. Bonaventure. He also has been an assistant coach at East Carolina (2003-05), Towson University (2001-03), Drexel (1997-01) and Hampton (1994-95). He spent two seasons as an assistant at Parkway High School in Philadelphia, Pa.

Presley’s recruiting efforts have yielded several All-Conference players. While at Towson, Presley landed point guard Mike Green who later transferred to Butler. During his time with the Bulldogs, Green was named the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year and in 2007-08 deemed the league’s Player of the Year and Mid-Major All-American. At East Carolina, Presley helped recruit successful student-athletes such as Tom Hammonds, who made the Conference USA All-Freshman Team in 2004-05. Also while at Towson, Presley landed CAA All-Conference selection Lawrence Hamm.

While at Drexel, Presley’s success on the recruiting trail translated into wins on the court for the Dragons. Presley recruited and coached All-Colonial Athletic Association players Robert Battle, Eric Schneider, Phil Gross and Sean Brooks. In 1998-99, Presley helped Drexel to its sixth 20-win season in seven years.

A Philadelphia native, Presley graduated from Kutztown University (Pa.) in 1993. He played at Kutztown under coach Bill Whitney and then began his coaching career as a student assistant for Whitney. Presley and his wife, Tonya, have a daughter Morgan, and a son, Bryce.
