Huntington, WV (HNN) - Marshall University (24-9) hosts a second former Southern Conference rival in CollegeInsider.com Tournament Quarterfinals as the Thundering Herd take on Appalachian State (23-12) Mar. 22 in the Henderson Center. This will be the 50th meeting between Marshall and the Mountaineers with the Herd holding a 32-17 series advantage. The teams are meeting for the first time since the 2005-06 season when the teams split a pair of games. The Mountaineers defeated MU 73-65 in Huntington. The Herd returned favor, 64-60, at Appalachian State.

Coming off a 93-71 victory over Harvard in the first round of the CIT, the Mountaineers are 23-12. Appalachian State won the North Division of the Southern Conference and advanced to the finals of the Southern Conference Tournament before falling 56-51 to Wofford. ASU has won 11 of their past 13 games entering Monday’s game against the Herd.

The Mountaineers are led by Donald Sims who is averaging 20.1 points per game. Sims posted 44 points against Davidson Jan. 19. Sims has been named Southern Conference Player of the Week three times this season. Kellen Brand is second on the team in scoring at 11.6 ppg.

Damier Pitts (So., Charlotte, N.C.) sank a pair of free throws with 0.5 seconds remaining lifted past Marshall past Western Carolina 90-88 in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament Mar. 16 in the Henderson Center.

The Catamounts battled back from 10-point deficit with 2:21 remaining to tie the score 88-88 on a Brandon Giles three-point basket with six seconds to go. The Herd advanced the ball to midcourt where Harounda Mutombo forced a turnover. The ensuing scrum over the ball resulted in Mutombo being credited with the steal, but he called a timeout as time expired.

However, Western Carolina spent their allotment of five timeouts earlier in the contest. After a conference in which the referees consulted the replay monitor. The referees put 0.5 seconds on the clock, but issued a technical foul. Pitts, who connected on 13-of-15 free throws earlier in the game, made both, giving Marshall the lead. The Catamounts were awarded the timeout. Western Carolina got the ball to Giles who attempted a long three-pointer which fell short, pushing the Herd to the victory.

Pitts tied his own Henderson Center record with 15 made free throws. The 5-10 point guard scored a career high 24 points. He grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists. Dago Pena (So., Punta Gorda, Fla.) was 6-of-7 from the field and 5-of-6 from three-point range for 18 points. Darryl Merthie (Sr., Sanford, Fla.) tied his season high with 14 points. Merthie added six rebounds and three assists. Tirrell Baines (Jr., Laurens, S.C.) charted 11 points.

Marshall held a 48-12 advantage from the free throw line. The Herd made 34-of-48 attempts from the charity stripe compared to 9-of-12 for the Catamounts.

Marshall’s 90-88 victory over Western Carolina was the first Herd postseason victory since the second round of the 1967 NIT Tournament in which Marshall defeated Nebraska 119-88. The MU victory over Western Carolina broke a nine-game postseason losing streak.
