Washington, DC (HNN) – U.S. Representative Nick J. Rahall (D-WV) issued the following statement today on the status of U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs plans to locate a medical clinic in Mercer County:

“Department of Veterans Affairs is not giving our region credit for our total Veteran population. It is clear we must continue to work strategically on getting our Veteran enrollment numbers up throughout southern West Virginia.

“Our challenge is getting the word out to every Veteran that registering translates to services. Even if you do not need VA services now, you may well in the future. Let me be clear – a Veterans’ clinic in Mercer County continues to have my full interest and strong support, and I will continue to pursue this goal with VA Secretary Sinseki. This project – without question – continues to be on the front burner, and it will take everyone working together to make our case to the VA.

“In the interim, we must look at expanding health care access options to Mercer County Veterans. I have contacted Karin McGraw, Administrator of the Beckley VA Medical Center, to request that their mobile Veteran Clinic make scheduled monthly visits to Mercer County. This type of service should be offered our Veterans in Mercer and surrounding counties.

“I cannot stress enough how important it is for all of our Veterans to be registered with the VA. I continue to look into to how the VA numbers were compiled and ways to boost Veterans’ enrollment. I strongly feel that there are eligible Veterans in West Virginia that have NOT enrolled, and therefore are not being counted.”
