False Workers' Comp Ad Continues on Raese's Greer Industries
Campaign 2010 Analysis: The Raese/Manchin U.S. Senate Race
By Huntingtonnews.net Staff
Governor Joe Manchin's negative attack ads on John Raese's Greer Industries continues,
despite a cease and desist letter being lodged by Greer Industries. The ads have claimed that
Greer Industries hasn't paid their Workers' Comp payments, a statement that has been proven
false by the Manchin Administration's own Workers Comp records as well as Greer's own records.
Manchin's ads have proven to be one of the more controversial aspects of his campaign, as the Governor has come under fire for attacking a respected West Virginia business during a recession.
"We're talking about a significant set of West Virginia businesses, with nearly a thousand
jobs, still doing well despite a serious national recession," said Jack Ellis, Senior Political
Analyst for HNN. "And the Governor is so petty in attacking his opponent that he goes
after the man's employees?"
"People around the state are asking what these innocent bystanders have to do with this race," said Ellis. "They don't mind a fair fight, but voters don't like to see you trying to hurt hundreds of West Virginians and their ability to feed their families."
"This shows a serious miscalculation on Manchin's part," said Ellis. "Whatever votes Manchin thinks he's getting out of hurting Greer Industries' employees is not worth the blowback he's getting from this."
"When you're the Governor, even your opponents' employees are people you have
to handle with care," said Ellis. "I look for this to help Raese win big up in the First
Congressional District. They know about Greer Industries up there, and many of their
employees are their friends and neighbors. Manchin's actions against Greer are seen
as abuses of power up in Monongalia County now, and they aren't likely to reward him
on Election Day."
"Again, if he wants to go after Raese on the issues, Manchin has had every forum open to him across the state," said Ellis. "But these constant attacks on the man's business and family are bad form by any definition."
