John Raese Takes Lead In U.S. Senate Race
By Huntingtonnews.net Staff
A new poll by Public Policy Polling (PPP), a Raleigh, NC polling firm, shows John Raese pulling ahead of Joe Manchin for the first time in their hotly contested U.S. Senate race. PPP surveyed 1,397 likely West Virginia voters from September 18th to 19th. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.6%. Click here for more.
PPP is a Democratic polling firm and has a growing reputation for accurate polling. The firm has been recognized by the Wall Street Journal as one of the two most accurate polling companies in the country.
According to the analysis provided by PPP, despite Manchin's 42% approval rating with Republicans the Governor is only getting 14% of their votes. Manchin also trails Raese 56-30 with Independents and, perhaps most importantly, Raese also leads 47-41 with another key group: the Democrats that disapprove of Obama.
"John Raese's message is clearly resonating," said Jack Ellis, Huntingtonnews.net's chief political analyst. "Despite the negative attack ads that Manchin has been throwing at him lately, Raese has obviously convinced enough voters that we need a change in Washington, D.C. And this is a particularly credible poll, first because of the size of the survey and the low margin of error. But secondly, this is a Democratic polling group. Now that says something when even a Democratic polling firm says that Raese is pulling ahead. And their reputation for accuracy is stellar."
"Take a close look at where we are now," said Ellis. "Whether it's the Obamacare issue, the jobs issue with Cap-and-Trade, the wasteful government spending issue--Raese owns them all with the voters as of now. Clearly, Manchin must go back to his playbook and realize that the negative attacks just aren't working. People care a lot more about their wallets right now than Joe Manchin's opinion of John Raese. I mean, who cares what the two think of each other? We've got a recession on, remember? As of now, Raese appears to be the only candidate in this race who really cares about West Virginians' jobs, the size of government, and taxes, not to mention his serious concerns about Obamacare."
Additionally, Raese has just released a new TV ad, this one capturing Governor Manchin on video touting his suppport of President Obama's health care bill--even before a formal bill was introduced. The new TV ad can be viewed by clicking here.
"This "Say It Ain't So" ad is a homerun for Raese, because there's no way Manchin can get around it," said Ellis. "It's right there, with Manchin saying how desperately we need Obamacare. Well, when two-thirds of your state can't stand Obamacare, how do you think Manchin's comments are going to play. Not very well, that's how."
Raese got another lift yesterday from the FreedomWorks PAC, a conservative group affiliated with Tea Party groups nationwide. In accepting the group's endorsement at the Miner's Statue at the State Capitol, Raese alerted those gathered of House Bill 103, which passed last year at Governor Manchin's urging.
Calling the bill "West Virginia's own Cap and Trade Bill," Raese cited the bill's mandate that 25% of coal-produced electricity at West Virginia's power plants will have to be replaced by "alternative energies." Critics have condemned the bill as one that will eliminate many coal jobs, while being impossible to fulfill, as alternative energy sources like wind energy are not producing nearly enough to replace coal-produced electricity.
Some senior citizens advocates have also noted that House Bill 103 could easily create higher electricity bills for people on fixed incomes around the state.
