Beckley, WV (HNN) - U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.), has announced that $36,600 has been awarded to the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District for the Harris Park Trail.

“Harris Park is a treasure in the Huntington area. Right down along the Ohio River it provides an outdoor space for local residents and visitors alike to enjoy,” said Rahall. “This new trail will not only offer some great outdoor exercise opportunities, it will provide learning opportunities and highlight the wildlife artwork of one of Huntington’s most talented artists, Mr. Chuck Ripper. I look forward to visiting the park when the new trail work is completed and I commend Director Jim McClelland on his leadership and vision for our Huntington area parks.”

The Land and Water Conservation Fund award of $36,600 will help Harris Park enhance a section of their current exercise trail through creating seven unique handicap-accessible information kiosks. These kiosks will display the flora and fauna found along the Ohio River and they will be designed and illustrated by world-renowned Huntington resident Chuck Ripper. In addition, along the upper walkway in the east section of the park, a set of six exercise stations will be added to the existing Paul Ambrose Trail for Health.

“This funding really not only helps us out financially, which is very important to us, but since the park is right downtown along the river, it has implications for upgrading the city, increasing Huntington as a tourism destination and attracting more businesses to the area,” explained Director James L. McClelland, Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District. “Therefore there are educational and economic advantages, as well as the more obvious conservation and recreation ones. Congressman Rahall has really helped us out many times--both here in Huntington and on a national level as well.”

“The Greater Huntington Parks and Recreation District is working hard to improve the health and wellbeing of the community,” said Rahall. “Harris Park serves as a great example of how improving the environment of the community can positively impact the people that live in that community and the economics of the community. Here in Huntington we aren’t just growing our outdoor opportunities, we are growing our potential for community development and job creation.”
