Raese Brings in Top Gun from D.C. to Manage U.S. Senate Campaign

The last name "Dornan" is still beloved by conservative Republicans across America. They remember the staunch defender of Reagan, conservatism, and America's military, Congressman Robert Dornan of California, known to his admirers as "B-1" Bob for his consistent support for the Air Force's B-1 bomber aircraft.

Pro-lifers, fans of the American military had in Congressman Dornan a reliable voice representing them in Washington. He was clearly one of those rare Congressmen who transcended his district and was, in effect, a national "at large" representative for movement conservatives everywhere. After a long and colorful career in politics, the former California Congressman resides in Virginia and helps the pro-life cause.

But a second generation of the Family Dornan has emerged in the form of John Raese's new campaign manager, Jim Dornan, the former Congressman's nephew. Dornan is Senior Vice President of Artemis Strategies in Washington, D.C., a government relations and public affairs firm. The younger Dornan is 45 but already has twenty years of political, legislative, management, administrative, media, and fundraising experience.

Politically, he was run successful Congressional races from Florida to Washington state and has worked on Capitol HIll for different Members of Congress, holding high level positions in both state and federal government.

In a recent interview with HNN, Dornan was both aware of West Virginia's Democratic heritage but also its turn towards being a red state in Presidential campaigns in the last three general elections. "With a great candidate like John and a favorable political climate like we have this year, this is going to be a spirited race, and it's definitely one we can win," said Dornan.

President Obama seems to be the target of the Raese campaign's radio and TV ads thus far. Governor Manchin's name is not even mentioned, though he is the likely opponent of the Republican nominee following the August 28th special primary election. Then candidate Barack Obama has already lost twice in West Virginia: first in the 2008 primary to Hillary Clinton, then in that year's general election to U.S. Senator John McCain.

No one knows this better than Dornan, who as a D.C. political consultant knows all the national conservative magazines, think tanks, and activist organizations who can help Raese get his message out to voters between now and November.

"I wanted to bring in a campaign manager who could hit the ground running, and after talking with Jim, I knew he was the man to do just that," said Raese after Dornan's announcement.

Time will tell if Jim Dornan's experience in prior campaigns will carry with it some of the same flair his famous Congressman uncle had on the floor of the House of Representatives. For now, he sounds eager to pour himself into the task.

"Everyone has been very helpful thus far, and this is a campaign that wants everyone to know that we will be reaching out every day to them across the Mountain State," said Dornan. "We intend to have a great conversation with the voters across West Virginia. That's why John has been out visiting different parts of the state from day one. We want the voters to know every day that John is on their side in the fight for better private sector jobs."
