Morgantown, WV (HNN) — Morgantown businessman John Raese, Republican candidate for the vacant U.S. Senate seat, today congratulated new State Republican Party Chairman Mike Stuart on his election and said he looks forward to a spirit of cooperation that will result in more GOP victories.

“First I want to thank outgoing chairman Doug McKinney and his wife Sue for their years of dedicated service to the Republican Party of West Virginia. We owe them both a debt of gratitude for working through some difficult challenges,” Raese said.

Raese, a Morgantown industrialist and media owner, also sponsored a breakfast in Stuart’s honor prior to the WVGOP State Executive Committee meeting and vote Saturday.

“Mike Stuart is a man with a strong vision for our state party. I am confident that under his leadership the West Virginia Republican Party will grow to new heights and help put more Republicans in office across the state,” Raese added.

“The one thing I believe Mike can do immediately and in the long term is to unite the party," said Raese. "When Mike gave his talk after he won the vote, the very first thing he did was to thank the McKinneys for their service to the party. As a former State GOP Chairman myself, that impressed me. That is the kind of good will we need to succeed as a party this year and into the future. We have a real opportunity, and we will become one strong, vibrant party to win seats in November.

Raese is the frontrunner for the GOP nomination in the Aug. 28 special primary election left vacant by the death of longtime Sen. Robert C. Byrd. He is the Chairman and CEO of Greer Industries, a West Virginia based family of companies with interests in limestone, steel, media, and tourism.
