Washington, DC (HNN) – The most current Federal Election Commission disclosure report indicates that Democrat-turned-Republican, “Spike” Maynard has received substantial campaign support from Massey Energy and its associates. The Upper Big Branch mine tragedy occurred near Beckley, so the heavy amount of Massey support might be deemed by voters to be a negative.

Blankenship, C.E.O. of Massey Energy, contributed $4,800 to Maynard’s campaign.

The CEO came under fire for contributing about $3 million dollars to the campaign of West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals candidate Brett Benjamin. Benjamin who was elected declined to step aside in a case involving Massey. The case went to the U.S. Supreme Court which ruled it was unconstitutional for a justice to set on a case of a major campaign donor.

An analysis of the Maynard totals indicates that about $21,000 of his contribution come from Blankenship, family members, Massey and its allies, including Greg Thomas, who has in the past helped the Massey CEO with other political contributions.

Maynard has received the endorsement of West Virginians for Life. He also received $3,500 from the Sarah (Palin) Pac, according to the FEC report.

Nick Rahall, his opponent, reportedly has about 14 times Maynard’s amount in his war chest, which includes the Keep Rahall in Congress Committee.
