Sheirl Fletcher, Ken Hechler Join Manchin in U.S. Senate Bid

Huntington, WV (HNN) - Sheirl Fletcher, Democrat from Monongalia County filed candidacy papers today in a bid to win the democratic primary for the unexpired term of the late U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd.
 
Fletcher, 53, was a candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2008 and was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates from 1998-2002.
 
A Morgantown resident she is a graduate of West Virginia University and has more than thirty years experience as an environmental specialist. She is the mother of two children, Ryan- a Purple Heart Marine Corps Veteran and WVU Sophomore; and Stephanie- a graduate of WVU School of Business.
 
Joining Ms. Fletcher in filing in the special Democratic primary was former Secretary of State and U.S. Representative Ken Heckler.
 
The 95-year-old Democrat spent 18 years (1959-1977) in Congress representing what was then West Virginia's Fourth Congressional District. Hechler then served as Secretary of State for four terms (1985-2001).
 
Previously, Governor Joe Manchin had announced his candidacy.
 
No Republican candidate has yet filed. On Wednesday, Shelly Moore-Capito declined to enter the race.

The filing deadline for the Aug. 28 special primary election for the unexpired U.S. Senate term is Friday at 5 p.m.
