Williamson, WV (HNN) – Thursday, the U.S. Senate will vote on an amendment, introduced by U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), that would take away the EPA's authority to regulate carbon dioxide.
Republican candidate for Congress, Elliott "Spike" Maynard today called on Congressman Nick Rahall to support an equivalent bill in the House of Representatives. “Senator Lisa Murkowski from Alaska has called for the EPA to be stripped of its ability to regulate carbon emissions entirely," said Maynard.
"Congressman Rahall should strongly support Congresswoman Capito's amendment now pending in the House," Maynard continued. "Senator Rockefeller has even announced he will support the Murkowski Amendment."
Earlier this year, Congressman Nick Rahall and two other coal field Democrats introduced legislation calling for a two year moratorium on the EPA regulating carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas.
"Despite a nearly one year war on coal miners, Congressman Rahall had remained tight-lipped regarding his friend President Obama and Obama's liberal job-killing EPA," said Maynard. " Rahall is holding the voters hostage on carbon emissions, just like he is holding workers hostage with permits.”
Maynard continued, “Only asking for a two year ceasefire in the war on coal miners is a slap in the face to southern West Virginia.” He added, “This ceasefire was an insincere attempt by three coal state Congressmen to combat the fact that their friends in the Obama administration are waging a war on coal miners.”
“It is extraordinary that Congressman Rahall has decided that 2010, an election year, is the year he should finally stand up for the coal miners that have sent him to Washington for the last 34 years."
Maynard concluded by saying, “You can only vote against the interests of your constituents so many times.”
Spike Maynard is seeking the Republican running for the 3rd Congressional District of West Virginia. Maynard is a former West Virginia State Supreme Court Justice and trial judge from Mingo County.
Murkowski, the ranking Republican on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and a strong proponent of moving the nation toward a cleaner energy future.
