Washington, DC (HNN) - U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall, D-WV, issued the following statement in response to notification from U.S. Department of Homeland Security informing him that West Virginia will receive more than $3.75 million in funding as part of the FY 2010 Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill.

Rahall also commended Sen. Robert C. Byrd, who serves as the Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, for his dedicated work to secure funding for homeland security programs including this recent funding announcement for the West Virginia Public Port Authority in Huntington, which will improve safety and security for West Virginia and the entire nation.

Rahall's statement:

“Homeland Security must remain a top priority for our state and our nation,” said Rahall. “West Virginia’s close proximity to Washington and its unique natural resources make it a critically important location for our national security. Thanks to Senator Byrd’s work to secure these grant funds, West Virginians can continue to work on enhancing protective measures for our key infrastructure facilities and broaden our emergency communications strategy to keep West Virginians safe from harm.”

The funding for West Virginia includes $1.5 million to secure critical infrastructure sites in local communities and across the state, including chemical facilities, financial institutions, nuclear and electric power plants, dams, stadiums, and other high-risk/high-consequence facilities; more than $1.185 million to the West Virginia Public Port Authority in Huntington; $267,000 for the Interoperable Emergency Communications Grant Program (IECGP) which will work to improve local, regional, statewide, and communications in case of the need to respond collectively to events such as natural disasters, acts of terrorism, or other man-made disasters; and $800,677 for the Drivers License Security Grant Program (DLSGP) which will work to ensure the accuracy of personal identification to prevent terrorism.

“These are crucial investments that are absolutely essential to our own – and that of our entire nation’s – security. West Virginia plays a very important role in responding to both natural and manmade disasters, and it is of the utmost importance we are prepared for and protected against threats, and ready to respond at a moment’s notice for the citizens of our state,” said Rahall.
