Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-WV, issued the following statement Tuesday evening, Jan. 19, 2010: “I am so relieved all passengers on US Airways Flight #2495 are safe and sound this evening. This incident at Yeager Airport underscores the extreme importance of strong safety and security measures.

“The cause and full scope of the incident are still being reviewed, but tonight we know that the Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS) played an important role and I was glad to be a part of getting it funded and built at Yeager. Funding for this type of life-saving safety infrastructure is available through the FAA's Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and as Chairman of the Commerce Committee and longtime Chairman of the Subcommittee on Aviation, I have worked to increase funding for AIP with exactly this kind of safety situation in mind. Through the years, Yeager Airport leadership and I have strongly supported Yeager’s long-term infrastructure needs and will continue to work with them to make sure they have the best technology and infrastructure possible.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to all of the passengers and their families.”
