Washington, DC (HNN) --- The U.S. House of Representatives recently approved a comprehensive Fiscal Year 2009 Omnibus Appropriations Bill, which includes millions requested by Representative Nick J. Rahall (D-WV) for Army Corps of Engineers initiatives in Southern West Virginia that will benefit the safety and well-being of area families.

Specifically, the bill includes funds for flood control in Huntington, including Krauts Creek/Spring Valley and Harris Riverfront Park.

"Our nation's water infrastructure is often overlooked, but in southern West Virginia, we do not have that luxury," Rahall said. "I will continue to do all I can to secure the needed investments so that our water is safe and clean, and our communities are protected from flooding."

At Rahall's request, the bill contains $1.5 million for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Greenbrier River Basin Construction. The initiative aims to combat serious harm to residents and the surrounding region that are caused by routine floods in the Greenbrier River and Knapp Creek vicinities. This is a joint venture with the West Virginia Conservation Agency.

The bill also contains $143,000 for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Cherry River Watershed Feasibility Study. The study will investigate water resource issues, flood damage reduction, ecosystem restoration and water supply issues for the Town of Richwood in Nicholas County.

In addition, Rahall secured $326,000 for initiatives to improve and study infrastructure and flood control needs in the Huntington area. Funding includes monies for the Upper Guyandotte River, the Harris Riverfront Park, and the Spring Valley-Krouts Creek studies.

Rahall also obtained $789,000 for the continuation of Southern West Virginia Environmental Infrastructure Section 340 Construction, an initiative that has addressed complicated infrastructure and flood control needs across Southern West Virginia with much success in recent years.

The bill also contains:

$12 million for Bluestone Lake Construction

$8.5 million for the Levisa and Tug Forks Construction

$2.63 million for R.D. Bailey Lake Operations & Maintenance

$2.5 million for Beech Fork Lake Operations & Maintenance

$1.89 million for East Lynn Lake Operations & Maintenance

$1.89 million for Summersville Lake Operations & Maintenance

$1.4 million for Bluestone Lake Operations & Maintenance

$1.05 million for Lower Mud Construction

$931,000 for the Robert C. Byrd Locks and Dam Construction

$574,000 for the Ohio River Basin Comprehensive Investigation

$200,000 for Island Creek Construction

The Omnibus Bill combines nine Fiscal Year 2009 Appropriations bills into one package. Passage of this bill is needed to continue vital government operations that ensure the continuation of necessary services to families in West Virginia and throughout the Nation. The bill now heads to the U. S. Senate for further consideration.
