From Nick Rahall Press Release

Washington, DC HNN) -- U.S. Rep. Nick J. Rahall (D-WV) on December 9 welcomed the announcement of a new plant planned for Mingo County that will convert coal into liquid fuel, tapping America’s most abundant energy resource to help America achieve greater energy independence.

“For years I have worked to help clear the way for coal to address our energy challenges more cleanly, efficiently, and affordably, and this new West Virginia plant will help to fulfill that goal,” said Rahall. “Southern West Virginia, deep in the heart of our Nation’s coal country, is the perfect place to help jumpstart a national coal-based liquid fuels industry.”

TransGas Development Systems, LLC announced plans Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008 to construct the new plant at the Mingo Hybrid Energy Park located on the King Coal Highway. The plant will use cutting-edge, environment-friendly Udhe gasifiers along with Exxon Mobil conversion technology to produce 18,000 barrels per day of zero-sulfur gasoline, along with about 2,000 barrels daily of naptha, particularly of use to the chemical industry, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas, primarily used as a heating fuel. Once fully operational, the plant is projected to provide 300 full-time jobs directly, in addition to contributing to hundreds of spin-off jobs throughout southern West Virginia.

“The Mingo County Redevelopment Authority and local officials have been working for many years to bring new private-sector business and job-opportunities to the area and Mike Whitt deserves a lot of credit for creatively pulling together a number of assets to help make this site attractive to TransGas,” Rahall said.

Rahall hosted a national conference on CTL in Beckley in August of 2007. He has also sponsored and cosponsored legislation which would pave the way for the rapid development and deployment of coal-to-liquid fuels. These clean-burning, high-performing synthetic fuels are produced through various conversion processes, which involve gasifying and liquefying coal for use in existing engines.

“America’s need for energy is continuing to grow and the path toward a better, more diverse energy future in America must include coal as a major player, along with renewables” said Rahall. “Coal continues to provide low-cost energy and can help to alleviate our Nation’s dangerous over-reliance on foreign fuels. We must be wise enough, and diligent enough to use coal to our advantage economically and environmentally.”
