FACT CHECK: Democratic Campaign Committee Distorts Facts to Smear Capito
By HNN Staff
from Capito press release
Washington, DC (HNN) - Rep. Shelley Moore Capito’s office on Wednesday, Oct. 31 dismissed what Capito, R-WV, called "the political smear campaign by Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) officials to distort the facts of a vote on important legislation to support small businesses."
“This is yet another attempt by an out-of-state organization to play politics with West Virginia’s veterans and spread lies about Congresswoman Capito’s exemplary record of support for Mountain State service veterans,” said Capito spokesman Jonathan Coffin. “The complete distortion of the facts by the DCCC proves that they’re more interested in political gamesmanship than in supporting honorable West Virginians who’ve served their nation proudly.”
SMEARS FROM THE DCCC
In a press release from the Democratic Committee, Spokesperson Jennifer Crider twisted facts to distort Capito’s vote. “Representative Shelley Capito cast an anti-Veteran vote to eliminate critical assistance for disabled veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and help them become successful small business owners,” she wrote.
“Capito voted for a Republican measure to eliminate a provision providing service-disabled veteran entrepreneurs priority in receiving federal contracts and assistance for service-disabled veterans with their procurement bidding. [H R 3867, #1016, 10/30/07] The American Legion opposes amendments to Section 201, like the Republican's attempts to cut assistance to veterans,” continued the smears.
TRUTH
The Republican measure in question refers to Section 101(b), a provision that has absolutely nothing to do with small business contracts for service-disabled veterans or Section 201.
Instead, the Republican amendment – which dealt with an entirely separate provision of the bill - sought to protect Historically Under-Utilized Business Zones (HUBZones) from changes to the law making it more difficult for federal contracting officers to award contracts to HUBZone firms. Twelve counties in West Virginia’s Second Congressional District include HUBZones.
By supporting the Republican measure and the final bill, Rep. Capito sought to support both service-disabled veterans, and important West Virginia HUBZone businesses.
As a member of the Rural Veterans Caucus, Rep. Capito is a passionate supporter of our nation’s veterans. She has co-sponsored legislation to support the accessibility of rural health care for veterans in West Virginia, to protect education benefits for deployed service members and to support veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.
