DEVELOPING: Deadly Event Avoided in Times Square

New York, NY (HNN) -- NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg has confirmed that a "deadly event" has been avoided. Bomb materials and gas cans were found in the abandoned vehicle. At a news conference, New York officials called it an "improvised car bomb."
 
New York's Times Square has been partially evacuated due to a bomb threat involving a SUV. The incident began about 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 1. Sources have told WCBS-TV that gunpower and gasoline were found inside the vehicle.
 
Along with pedestrians, some of the Saturday night Broadway shows were impacted, particularly theatergoes on their way to shows. In some cases, theatergoers were allowed to remain inside until the show ended then faced obstacles returning to hotels.
 
The car was parked in front of a Broadway Theatre where Disney's popular "Lion King" is performed.
 
An alert street vendor and a mounted policeman are credited with quick actions regarding the suspicious vehicle.
 
Vehicle and foot traffic had been blocked between 44th and 46th Streets from Broadway to Seventh Avenue. The area has been expanded to add 43rd Street and part of Eighth Avenue.
 
According to a NY Times report, the package inside the vehicle smoked, but did not explode.
