Huntington, WV (HNN) – Despite having only seven players dressed in Tuesday’s nonconference game at the Cam Henderson Center, Marshall women’s basketball held Morehead State to just 24 second half points in a 61-50 loss. MU’s Tynikki Crook reached double-figures for the 11th time this season, scoring a team-high 14 points to go along with seven rebounds.

Marshall drops to 3-8 on the season, while Morehead State improves to 9-4. With the win the Eagles snapped an eight game Herd winning streak against MSU.

With two starters missing due to inclement weather MU struggled to find its legs in the opening minutes, with Salesse Stovall and Tessa Johnson each making their first starts in a Herd uniform and Dorina Barrett seeing only her third Division I game.

“These were extremely strange circumstances that were beyond our control,” head coach Royce Chadwick said. “We don’t have any excuses to not execute today like we should have. Our young players were unable to rise to the occasion and get the things that we needed to get done to get the win.”

Morehead State jumped out to a 10-0 lead as the Thundering Herd missed its first six shot attempts. Stovall drained a jumper to put Marshall on the board at the 15:22 mark.

The Herd worked its way back coming within one at 20-19 following a three-point play by Alaya Mitchell. However, the Eagles wasted no time responding with a 17-5 run to close out the first half, thanks in large part to Courtney Lumpkin’s nine consecutive MSU points.

Marshall found itself within three, 44-47, with 6:14 left in the contest was unable to get convert the baskets it needed in the second half. MSU’s Ashar Harris battled foul trouble to score 11 of her game-high 15 points in the second half. Harris grabbed the game’s only double-double with 11 rebounds.

Chynna Bozeman and Courtney Lumpkin also added double-digits for Morehead State.

Rashedah Henriques added nine points despite arriving in Huntington an hour before game time and making her way to the arena less than 20 minutes before game time. Alaya Mitchell also chipped in nine points for the Herd.

Marshall looks forward to better weather in the Northeast as the Herd hopes to see the rest of its roster return to Huntington with the Herd scheduled to finish the calendar year against Elon on Dec. 30th, at the Cam Henderson Center. Thursday marks Daddy Day at the Cam, children will receive free admission with the purchase of an adult ticket. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
