Huntington, WV (HNN) - Marshall’s Tynikki Crook scored a game-high 25 points for the second consecutive game to lead the Herd to a 71-67 win against Cleveland State in Saturday night’s nonconference women’s basketball game at the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd improves to 3-6 on the season while the Vikings fall to 6-3.
Cleveland State jumped out to a 6-0 advantage and would hold the lead throughout most of the first half. However, an Orlandria Williams layup would cap off an 8-0 Herd run and give the Thundering Herd its first lead of the night, 18-16, at the 5:20 mark. Tessa Johnson and Tynikki Crook combined for eight points in the final three minutes to help the Herd to a 29-23 advantage at the break.
Marshall’s lead would extend to double-digits in the opening minutes of the second stanza but the Vikings proved its resiliency. Cleveland State would battle back with a 12-4 run, capped off by a three-point play by Destinee Blue, to come within one, at 59-58, with just 5:03 remaining.
Once again MU would look to its senior, as Crook would net nine of her 25 points during the final five minutes of action. Crook would finish the night with 14 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season.
CSU’s Janelle Adams layup with 19 seconds left made it a one point game at 68-67 but Ruiz’s two free throws with 16 seconds left would seal the win for the Herd.
“It came down to the wire again,” head coach Royce Chadwick said. “We got great contributions from a lot of different people. Our guards had one of their best nights. All around it was a great team win and we were happy to get it.”
Marshall presented its most diverse offensive attack of the season, with nine players scoring for the Thundering Herd. Johnson finished the night with a career-high 12 points. Veronica Ruiz chipped in 13 points and six boards for MU.
Shalonda Winton led all Cleveland scorers with 17 points, while Janelle Adams chipped in 12 points. Takima Keane and Shawnita Garland each added 11 points in the losing effort.
Marshall travels to Cincinnati, Ohio on Tuesday, Dec. 21 before breaking for the Holidays. Game time is set for 7 p.m., at Fifth Third Arena and will be televised on Fox Sports Ohio.
