Muncie, IN (HNN) – Finishing in its highest ranking at an invitational in program history, the Marshall University swimming and diving team placed second at the Doug Coers Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
“This weekend was a great test,” said head coach Russell Hunt. “The team certainly embraced the challenge and more importantly, approached the challenge collectively – sprints, distance, stroke events, divers – everyone contributed this weekend in a collective effort.”
The Thundering Herd (2-3) put up 503.5 points in the second-place effort. Among the top individual performances was a pair of first-place finishes from Heather Moore. The freshman won the 400 IM in a time of 4:35.98 and took the 1650 Freestyle with a 17:44.36 finish. Vera Niemeyer clocked in a first-place finish of her own, claiming a victory in the 200 Backstroke in 2:07.06.
Marshall also fared well in the relay events, finishing second in the 200 Medley Relay (1:51.85), 800 Freestyle Relay (7:54.85) and 400 Freestyle Relay (3:38.40).
“It was nice to take this midseason trip and compete in a championship environment,” said Hunt. “Moving forward, it allows the team a reference point as they prep for future competition.”
The Herd returns to action Jan. 14, when it heads to Akron, Ohio for the first dual meet of the spring schedule.
Final Team Results
1. Ball State, 801
2. Marshall, 503.5
3. Grand Valley State, 400.5
4. University of Findlay, 169
5. Valparaiso, 121
