Huntington, WV (HNN) – Head coach Tom Herrion and the Thundering Herd men’s basketball team will officially kick off the 2010-11 season on Friday, playing host to WVU Tech at 7 p.m. inside the Cam Henderson Center.
The 99th season of Marshall basketball will mark the first for Coach Herrion, who took over the program in April. Herrion came to Marshall after three seasons at the University of Pittsburgh where he helped the Panthers to an 83-24 record as the Associate Head Coach.
Herrion also brings four years of head coaching experience to Marshall, having served at the College of Charleston in that capacity from 2002-06. He led the Cougars to an 80-38 mark and an NIT appearance in 2003.
Marshall welcomes back two starters and six returning players from last year’s squad that posted a 24-10 record. The win total marked the first 20-win season since 1999-00 and was the most victories by the Herd since it won 25 games in 1986-87. The team advanced to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament, winning its first postseason game since an NIT win over Nebraska in 1967.
Tirrell Baines is the lone returning senior on the team. He has played in 90 games at Marshall including 28 last season. Transfer Orlando Allen marks the other senior on the team. He played two seasons at Oklahoma and has one year of eligibility remaining.
Last Friday, the Herd faced off against Concord in its lone exhibition contest, coming away on the winning end of a 112-65 decision. Returners Shaquille Johnson and Dago Pena led the way with 20 points apiece while newcomer DeAndre Kane fell just two rebounds short of a triple-double. The sophomore tallied 12 points while dishing out a game-high 11 assists.
WVU Tech will come into Friday’s game with two games under its belt. The Golden Bears topped Salem International, 105-85, on November 4 and will take on OSU-Newark tonight. They also faced off against Alderson-Broaddus in an exhibition game, winning 74-69.
They are led by Roi Buchbinder, who averaged 11.5 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per contest last season, helping the team to a 13-17 record. Former Marshall player Adam Williams, a member of the Thundering Herd from 2007-09, is an assistant coach with WVU Tech. Williams played in 51 games in his time with the Herd.
Friday marks the 99th season-opener for the Thundering Herd, who has gone 75-23 in its previous openers. Marshall has won its last four opening games after losing three straight from 2003-05. In 2009, MU opened up the season hosting North Carolina A&T and came away with a 79-63 victory.
Marshall University's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is conducting a food drive to benefit the Huntington Area Food Bank through Conference USA's Changing Lives Program.
Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 1-800-THE-HERD.
The team will have just two days off before returning to action on Monday, November 15, taking on Glenville State at 7 p.m. at the Cam Henderson Center.
