Coal Conference Slated Saturday Nov 20 at Marshall

Huntington, WV (HNN) – The Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition , Sierra Club West Virginia Chapter , and MU’s Student Environmental Action Coalition hosts a one day “The Toll of Coal” conference, Saturday, Nov. 20 from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. at the Marshall University Campus Christian Center.
Scientists, academicians, healthcare professionals, coalfield residents and other experts will discuss the impact of coal use on human health. The conference includes a keynote address, panel discussions and interactive workshops.
Speakers and panelists include Dr. Ben Stout, Wheeling Jesuit University; Dr. Michael Hendryx, WVU; Dr. Michael M. Kostenko DO, Daniels, WV; and Chuck Nelson, a former deep coal miner.
Other speakers include Maria Lamert, a resident of Prenter, WV where some community members believe coal-slurry contaminated groundwater has worsened people’s health.
Rita J. Harris, who has worked on environmental and social justice issues for two decades, delivers the keynote speech at 9 a.m. Ms. Harris has worked on the Sierra Club’s Environmental Justice Program for eleven years in which he duties have her working in neighborhoods concerned about the health impacts of air toxics, hazardous waste water, water pollution, and contaminated properties.
