Huntington, WV (HNN) – The Marshall University men’s basketball team used 59.2 percent shooting from the field to run away with a 112-65 victory against Concord University in its sole preseason game Thursday night inside the Cam Henderson Center.

The Thundering Herd hit 42 of its 71 field goal attempts and had five players score in double figures. Junior’s Shaquille Johnson and Dago Pena scored a team-high 20 points and combined for 15-of-25 shooting.

“That first 20 minutes I really thought our kids came out and responded to the challenge of being ready to play tonight,” head coach Tom Herrion said. “I thought they came out with really good energy, our unselfish play offensively was tremendous. Our ability to share the ball made it easy to move around. I was disappointed though in our lack of response coming out of the halftime. We came out flat as if it was the norm and without the same amount of intensity as the first half.”

Marshall led from start to finish, as a DeAndre Kane dunk opened up the scoring just 16 seconds in. That lead would reach as many as 39 points in the opening half before the Herd took a 60-24 lead into the locker room. The defense of the Herd played solid defense, holding the Mountain Lions to .321 shooting in the first half and .359 for the game.

The second half saw Marshall extend its advantage to as many as 49 points in the final minute before cruising to the 112-65 victory.

In his first game as a member of the Herd, Kane was just two rebounds shy of a triple-double as he netted 12 points, dished out a team-high 11 assists and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, all while committing just one turnover.

Senior forward Tirrell Baines chipped in with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds, while N.C. State transfer Johnny Thomas contributed 14 points.

As a team, the Herd shot 45.8 percent from behind the arch, connecting on 11 of its 24 attempts from downtown.

The Mountain Lions, members of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, were led by guard Javaughn Acree-Manue who poured in a team-high 17 points. Rick Alderman and Aaron Fluellen also scored in double figures as each player finished with ten points.

Marshall jumps into the regular season next Friday, November 12, as the Thundering Herd welcomes West Virginia Tech into the Cam Henderson Center for its season opener. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. It will mark the first of four home games to open the regular season. Season tickets are still available online at www.HerdZone.com or by calling 1-800-THEHERD.
