Huntington, WV (HNN) – The Tri-State Marching Band Festival, hosted by Marshall University’s Marching Thunder and Kappa Kappa Psi, will take place Saturday, Nov. 6, in Joan C. Edwards Stadium on MU’s Huntington campus.

Steve Barnett, Marshall’s director of bands, said 31 bands from West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio and Virginia will perform in the largest band festival in the region and one of the largest in the country.

“The Tri-State Band Festival is one of the largest events hosted by Marshall University and is a very important recruiting tool for the Marching Thunder and for Marshall University,” Barnett said. “There will be more than 12,000 band students, parents and supporters in attendance on Saturday. I am very proud to be associated with such a large and important event for our university and for Huntington.”

Bands are divided into four classes determined by the number of playing members in the band: A1, A2, AA and AAA, with A1 being the smallest. Awards will be given in each class for first-, second-, and third-place band, color guard, drum major and percussion. Overall awards will be given for majorettes, twirlers and dance teams.

The bands with the highest overall scores will be awarded Grand Champion and runner-up Grand Champion. The bands receiving the highest scores in Marching Performance, Music Performance and General Effect will also receive awards. The Pro Mark Corporation, which is an official endorser of the Marching Thunder, will award $100 gift certificates to the highest scoring percussion section in each class.

The festival begins at 11:15 a.m. with Greenbrier West’s performing in the A1 class. The last performance is Cabell Midland at 8:45 p.m. Admission is $5 for school age and up.

The Marshall University Marching Thunder will perform an exhibition for all of the high school bands and spectators at the end of the festival just prior to the awards ceremony.

“I would like to thank all of the members of Kappa Kappa Psi, our honorary band fraternity, for all their work with the festival,” Barnett said. “I would also like to thank all of the members of the Marshall University Marching Thunder for their work throughout the festival day serving as band guides, parking lot attendants, judge runners, equipment trailer workers, etc. This festival would not be possible without the help and the hard work from Scott Morehouse, MU Associate Athletic Director, Steve Wojcikowski, Athletics Director of Events, the Athletic GA’s and their staff. We offer our sincere thanks to them.”
