Rock Hill, SC (HNN) – Down two goals with ten minutes to play, the Marshall University men’s soccer team stormed back to even the match, and then defeated the Winthrop Eagles in double-overtime, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Eagle Field.

The Thundering Herd improved to 9-4-4 (3-3-1 C-USA) with the non-conference victory and in the process set a school record for overtime matches in a season with ten. Winthrop dropped to 4-10-1.

Carl Munday netted the game-winner two and half minutes into the double-overtime as he connected on a diving header provided by senior Sammy Boateng. The winning assist was Boateng’s third of the game and eighth of the season. Both are career highs.

Sophomore Peter Bulat put the Herd on the board in the 80th minute with his first goal of the year and cut the Herd deficit to 2-1. Just a minute and a half later MU drew even courtesy of Dalton Hadlock’s third goal of the season. Boateng, along with Zach Hunter, were credited with the assist.

Munday’s golden-goal was his fourth of the season and ties him for a team-high in that category with defender Jordan HIlgefort.

“We didn’t play very well in the first half, and I think it was a little bit of a letdown after last week,” head Coach Bob Gray said. “But we pushed everyone forward and got one back and was able to get the equalizer right there after. For the last 10 minutes and into overtime we controlled play. Winthrop is a better team than their record indicates, but it was a good sign to see our team battle back and steal a win on the road.”

The Herd has one remaining game left on the schedule and it is a critical one. MU travels to Birmingham, Ala., on Nov.3 for a contest with the UAB Blazers. Marshall is currently in fifth place in the C-USA standings with 10 points while UAB is right behind them with nine. A win against the Blazers would secure MU a spot in the six-team Conference USA Tournament.
