Huntington, WV (HNN) – Three first half goals in the span of six minutes lifted the Marshall University men’s soccer team to a dominant 4-1 over the No.18 South Carolina Gamecocks 4-1 on Senior Night at Sam Hood Field.
The Thundering Herd (8-4-4, 3-3-1 C-USA) took a massive step forward towards locking up a spot in the conference tournament with the three points and now sits in sole possession of third place with 10 points. South Carolina falls to 7-5-2 on the season and 2-2-1 in Conference USA.
Marshall came out and blitzed USC as they found the back of the net three times in the first 11 minutes of the first half and had the 947 fans in attendance on their feet for most of the half.
Devin Perkins started the onslaught as he corralled a loose ball off a corner kick and buried it past South Carolina keeper Jimmy Maurer just 4:31 into the contest for his first goal of the season.
Just 30 seconds later, freshman Anthony Virgara netted his second goal of the 2010 campaign with an outstanding individual effort as he gathered the ball just across midfield, beat two defenders inside the box, and slipped the ball past Maurer for a 2-0 Herd advantage.
Mat Butler would cap off the scoring frenzy as Sammy Boateng beat his man down the flank and crossed it to Butler who one-timed the ball past an outstretched Maurer. The Herd would take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
South Carolina would be first to score in the second half, but it would be in the 85th minute as the match was all but over. But just for good measure, Boateng would add one more assist, this time to fellow graduate Dalton Hadlock, who put the icing on the cake and sent the seniors out with a 4-1 win.
“We worked on finishing all week long,” head coach Bob Gray said. “If you look at South Carolina, they are one of the stingiest teams in the country when it comes to giving up goals. We expected this to be a one goal game and to hopefully be on the winning end of it, but to come out and score three goals just like that, it was great.
“We had great fan support tonight,” Gray continued. “I don’t think there are too many universities in the country that have an atmosphere like this. They were the 12th man for us tonight. I was very pleased with our efforts and it is great to send our seniors out like this.”
The Herd has two remaining games left on the schedule, one non-conference game with Winthrop on Oct. 30th, and its finale at UAB on Nov. 3.
