Huntington, WV (HNN) - Marshall University’s Erika Duncan (Easthaven, Scotland) and Angela DeSumma (Doylestown, Pa.) each tallied a goal and an assist en route to a 2-1 win against Conference USA foe Colorado College in Friday night’s women’s soccer game at Sam Hood Field.

The Herd earns its first-ever win against the Tigers, while improving to 5-8-3, 3-5-1 C-USA and snapping a five game winless streak. Colorado College falls to 7-6-4, 3-6-1 C-USA.

The Thundering Herd jumped on the board quick with two goals in the first 19 minutes of the match. Duncan blasted a shot just inside the 18 yard box that was knocked down by Tigers goalkeeper Caitlin Hulyo. DeSumma gained control and attempted a shot of her own that was deflected by a CC defender to Duncan, who nailed a second shot into the crossbar and bounced into the net. With the goal Duncan tied Amanda McMahon as Marshall’s all-time leading scorer with 26 for her career.

Duncan would return the favor as the two connected again, when Duncan found DeSumma who rocketed a shot home from the six yard box for her third goal of the season.

The Herd enjoyed a 2-0 cushion at the break. However, the Tigers made it clear they weren’t going down without a fight. Colorado College proved to be aggressive early in the second half as Sierra Keeler beat Marshall goalkeeper Lexa Hughes (Everett, Wash.) and the Thundering Herd defense just seconds into the half but was unable to capitalize as the Tigers watched her shot soar just wide of the net.

The Tigers would continue the pressure throughout the remainder of the game and would come within one as Keeler connected off a header from Kelsey Wise in the 87th minute but that’s as close as it would get.

Keeler ended the night with a game-high seven shots.

MU preserved its first-half lead, despite being outshot 14-1 in the second stanza and 22-8 in the match.

Hughes recorded a career-high nine saves on the night.

The Thundering Herd continues its quest for its first-ever Conference USA Tournament birth against UTEP on Sunday afternoon. The match also marks senior night for five Marshall seniors; Kristen Berquist, Erika Duncan, Emma Harrison, Marisa Leconte and Meghan Wetzel.
