Dallas, TX (HNN) – The Marshall University men’s soccer team fell in overtime, 2-1, to No.8 SMU Sunday night at Westcott Field in Conference USA action.
The match with the Mustangs marked the seventh overtime contest for the Thundering Herd (7-4-2, 2-3-0 C-USA) so far this season. The win improves SMU to 11-1-0 overall and 3-1-0 in conference.
The Mustangs struck first as SMU’s leading goal scorer Juan Castillo netted his eighth goal of the season in the 24th minute. However, Marshall’s Diego Ayala would bring the Herd back even in the 39th minute with his first collegiate goal. Tom Jackson provided the helper with a long throw-in which found Ayala on the back post for the tap in.
But for the second game in a row, MU was unable to capitalize on a man advantage as SMU’s Leone Cruz was dealt a red card in the 79th minute.
Neither team would find the net for the remaining 10 minutes of regulation, but it would take SMU just four minutes into the first golden-goal overtime period to gain three conference points. The winner was headed home by Zach Barnes off a cross from eight yards out.
The Herd continues action on the road next weekend as MU travels to Tulsa for a contest with No.5 TU on Friday night and a non-conference match with Oral Roberts on Sunday. Marshall plays four of its final five matches on the road.
