Huntington, WV (HNN) - Marshall University’s Erika Duncan (Easthaven, Scotland) registered her second goal of the season on a penalty kick late in the second half to defeat Tulsa 1-0 in Friday night’s women’s soccer Conference USA season home opener at Sam Hood Field.
The Herd improves to 4-4-2, 2-1 C-USA and remains undefeated at Sam Hood Field this season, while Tulsa has dropped five-straight matches to fall to 5-6-0, 0-3 C-USA.
“I think it was an aggressive game but to be fair we are in conference play and with what we saw on the road last week, everyone has a little higher intensity and there’s more on the line,” head coach Kevin Long said. “These games, these wins and losses mean more and I would imagine through the rest of the season we should see games just as physical if not more.”
Marshall was unable to capitalize on its aggressive play early in the opening half. Megan Tabler (Ashland, Ky.) blasted a shot off the crossbar on a breakaway in the 12th minute, while Erin Blakely (Westerville, Ohio) was stuffed by Golden Hurricane goalkeeper Katie Bykowski from inside the six yard box just under the 11 minute mark of the first stanza.
Tulsa looked to be the enforcer in the second half, firing a shot right from the opening kick, but it was the Herd who would strike for the only goal of the match.
Duncan’s penalty kick was setup by an Angela DeSumma corner kick that was bobbled by Bykowski. The ball came loose and found Robin Waskowski (Strongsville, Ohio) who blasted a shot into the hand of a Golden Hurricane defender. Duncan placed her shot into the upper left corner of the net for the 25th goal of her career. She is just one goal shy of tying Marshall’s all-time scoring leader Amanda McMahon.
“It’s nice having that kind of composure and that kind of leadership out there on the field,” Long said of Duncan.
Goalkeepers Lexa Hughes (Everett, Wash.) and Lindsey Kerns (Hurricane, W.Va.) split time between the pipes for Marshall, each seeing 45 minutes of action. Hughes grabbed three saves on the night, while Kerns registered her third win of the season.
Bykowski snagged six saves on the night, bringing her total on the year to 43.
The Herd avenged last season’s 4-1 loss, but Tulsa still grasps the series lead 4-2.
The Thundering Herd will host SMU on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. at Sam Hood Field. GameTracker is available for the match by logging on to the women’s soccer schedule.
