Huntington, WV (HNN) – Sammy Boateng scored five minutes into the second half and Travis Brent added an insurance goal in the 63rd minute as the Marshall University men’s soccer team defeated FIU 2-0 Saturday night at Sam Hood Field.

The win improves the Thundering Herd record to 7-2-2 overall and 2-1 in Conference USA. The Panthers fall to 4-4-0 overall and 0-1 in conference.

After a scoreless first half, it took the Herd’s captain Boateng five minutes into the second stanza to find the back net. The goal was set up by Tom Jackson who took a long throw which was flicked on by junior Aaron Dini. Dini’s header found Boateng open on the back post who tucked away his first goal of the season.

Brent would add an insurance goal in the 63rd minute as he buried a header into the back on the net past FIU keeper Shane Lopez. Zach Hunter provided the assist off a corner kick.

The Herd outshot the Panthers 16-14 and held the advantage in corner kicks 3-1.

Defender Natty Thomas received a red card in the 72nd minute for a rash challenge, but Herd goalie Daniel Withrow was only called on to make two saves on the night en route to his fifth clean sheet of the season.

“Tonight was the kind of soccer I like to see out of our team,” said head coach Bob Gray. “We were more physical and a lot more aggressive. We won a lot of first and second balls. We were successful last year because we wanted it more than other teams. I haven’t had that feeling yet this year. Even though we were 6-2-2, I felt like we were winning on talent alone, but tonight we played with a lot of effort.”

That same effort is going to be needed next Wednesday as the Herd welcomes the Kentucky Wildcats to Sam Hood Field for another Conference USA battle. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
