Hattiesburg, MI (HNN) - Marshall University’s Freya Holdaway (Llandrindod Wells, Wales) netted her first collegiate goal en route to a 1-0 victory against Southern Miss in the women’s soccer Conference USA season opener on Friday night at Marshall Bell Track and Soccer Complex.
The Thundering Herd improves to 3-3-2 on the season and 1-0 in C-USA action, snapping the Golden Eagles three-game home win-streak. Southern Miss falls to 3-5-1, 0-1 in C-USA. With the win, Marshall takes control of the all-time series four games to three.
MU came out of the gates aggressive, tallying eight shots in the opening half, but the match would remain scoreless until the 63rd minute when a Golden Eagles foul outside the box gave Marshall’s Angela DeSumma (Doylestown, Pa.) a free kick. DeSumma found teammate Erika Duncan (Easthaven, Scotland) who rocketed a shot that was deflected by goalkeeper Hannah Vanderboegh. Holdaway connected on the rebound for the only goal of the match.
Herd goalkeeper Lexa Hughes (Everett, Wash.) made the first appearance of her college career between the pipes and stopped four shots.
“It was an intense week of training at the goalkeeper position and I’m excited to see that we have all three challenging each other,” head coach Kevin Long said. “We are happy to see Lexa healthy and she came up with a couple big saves tonight for us.”
Marshall’s Kate Ball (Louisville, Ky.) tallied a game-high three shots on the night.
“After a great first win in conference we head over to nationally ranked UCF and try and give them some competition and hopefully sneak away with some results,” Long continued.
The Thundering Herd continues on the road to Orlando, Fla., to do battle with No. 23 UCF Knights. Kickoff is set 1 p.m. on Sunday.
