Johnson City, TN (HNN) – The Marshall University men’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Monday night as the Thundering Herd fell to East Tennessee State University 2-1 in overtime at Summer-Taylors Stadium.
The Herd (5-1-2, 1-0-0 C-USA) trailed just 1:20 into the contest as the Buccaneer’s (4-2-0) Colin Pugh netted his first goal of the season. However, Jordan Hilgefort would bring MU even in the 19th minute with a rip that found the back on the net from 25 yards out. Hilgefort tallied his third goal of the season which is tied for the team high.
The two sides would play a scoreless second half as Marshall would enter its fourth overtime in eight games. In extra time, ETSU scored the game-winner seven minutes into the first session off a header from Aaron Schoenfeld.
“We looked tired tonight,” head coach Bob Gray said. “But give ETSU credit, they played inspired. It is nice though that we are going to have six days off before our next game. We have played a lot of games in a short period of time.
Marshall is back in conference USA action this weekend as MU hosts the UCF Knights on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 26th.
