Huntington, WV (HNN) – The Marshall University men’s soccer team connected on two set pieces en route to a 2-0 victory Wednesday night at Sam Hood Field against Wright State.

The win improves the Thundering Herd to 4-0-2 to remain unbeaten and also hands the Raiders (4-1-0) their first loss of the season.

Defender Jordan Hilgefort put Marshall on the board in the 27th minute when he headed home his second goal of the season from a Sammy Boateng cross off a free kick. Boateng notched his team-high third assist of the season.

The Herd controlled play in the first 45 minutes, outshooting the Raiders 8-3, while placing four shots on goal. On the other end of the field, the Herd defense shut down the WSU attack, not allowing the Raiders a shot on goal.

The second half was much of the same as the Herd dictated the pace of the match, and once again outshooting Wright State 6-4.

MU would add an insurance goal at the 65:47 mark when Zach Hunter was fouled just outside the Raider’s 18-yard box. Tom Jackson stepped up to take the free kick, and made no mistake as he curled the ball over the WSU three-man wall and into the left upper-90 for his second tally on the young season.

Sophomore net-minder Daniel Withrow was called upon to make three saves but owned his box all night on corner kicks and crosses. The reigning Conference USA Freshman of the Year recorded his third shutout of the season and improved his goal against average to a razor thin .047 while upping his saves percentage to .864.

“This was probably the most complete game for us as a team, especially for our starting 11, I am very pleased with how they played,” head coach Bob Gray said. “We controlled the play of the game and we did some things we worked on in training and that is pleasing to see.”

The Herd now jumps into Conference USA action as MU and Memphis play the inaugural match of the 2010 C-USA schedule in Memphis, Tenn. The match is set for this Saturday, Sept. 18 at 8 p.m. EST.

“The difference between this year are last year is that we are not going to sneak up on any teams in conference this year after the run we had last year,” Gray stated. “Every team in the conference is going to be gunning for us. It is tough to win on the road but we are going to have to find a way to do that.”
