Huntington, WV (HNN) – After conceding the first goal of the contest, the Marshall University men’s soccer team rallied to score three-straight goals and defeat Radford University 3-1 Monday afternoon at Sam Hood Field.
The Thundering Herd (2-0-1) found itself trailing the Highlanders (1-1) just 13 minutes into the match when a Luis Grande through ball found Mike Handlin whose one-time-strike beat MU goalkeeper Daniel Withrow.
The Herd, however, would respond just nine minutes later to equalize the game at 1-1. Captain Mat Butler slotted a through ball to fellow captain Sammy Boateng whose shot was blocked by RU keeper Ryan Taylor, but the rebound fell to a trailing Carl Munday who placed the ball into the empty net. It was Munday’s first goal as a member of the Thundering Herd.
The game-winning goal would come from defender Jordan Hilgefort as he headed home a long throw in from striker Tom Jackson in the 53rd minute.
The Herd would then add an insurance goal in the 87th minute when MU caught the Highlanders pushing for the equalizer. Tom Jackson led a 3-on-1 counter attack which resulted in an empty net tap in for defender Dalton Hadlock, who also notched his first career goal as a member of the Herd. Jackson, the Man of the Match, finished with two assists.
“We were flat in the first 30 minutes,” head coach Bob Gray said. “We looked like a team that was playing its third game in five days, because we were. And when Devin [Perkins] went out in the first half with an injury, we were back on our heels. But at the end of the day we are 2-0-1 and we will take it.
“We found out what we were made of today. We came back and tied the game before halftime, and then controlled play in the second half. It will be good for our players to have a couple days off to rest.”
The Herd has five days off before it takes part in the VMI tournament, in which MU will play Liberty on Friday and VMI on Sunday.
Match Notes:
Shots: Marshall 18, Radford 10
Corner Kicks: Marshall 4, Radford 5
Saves: Marshall 3, Radford 7
Fouls: Marshall 18, Radford 10
Man of the Match: Tom Jackson
