Bluefield, WV (HNN) – Fayanga Keita’s diving header in the 83rd minute gave Marshall a 2-1 come-from-behind victory against Gardner-Webb in the Thundering Herd’s first exhibition match of the season Saturday afternoon at the East River Soccer Complex.

The Herd and the Bulldogs played a scoreless first half with each team having multiple opportunities to find the net but could not convert. MU outshot GWU 5-4 in the opening frame.

GWU was first to find the back of the net as Chijioke Akujuobi beat two defenders and slipped the ball near post past an out-stretched Dane Wilson in the 58th minute.

However, a spectacular half volley from freshman Ryan Kelly brought Marshall even in the 72 minute as his shot found the upper 90. Zach Hunter provided the assist from a corner kick.

Kelly would then tally the game-winning assist as his cross in the box found Keita and he buried the header home to give Marshall the 2-1 triumph.

“It’s always good to get a win, whether it is an exhibition match or in the regular season,” head coach Bob Gray said. You play those games to found out about some players and we learned today that we have some depth on this team.

“I wasn’t displeased with our first group, but I didn’t feel like we were a threat to score,” Gray stated. We still have a lot of things to figure out and we have a week and a half to do it. Overall I thought it was good for both team to play this game and I thought we showed character to not only come back and tie the game but to score that second goal and leave with a win.”

Coach Gray will have one more opportunity to evaluate his team as the Herd plays its final exhibition contest on Aug. 25th at home as MU hosts the University of Charleston at Sam Hood Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Marshall begins the regular season on Sept. 1, when the Xavier Musketeers come to town.
