Huntington, WV (HNN) — Marshall University head coach Tom Herrion has announced two additions to the men’s basketball coaching/administrative staff. Herrion has selected Michael Brown for the Director of Operations’ position.
Brown comes to Huntington from Dartmouth College where he spent the 2009-10 season as an assistant coach for the 2009-10 staff. Prior to joining the Big Green staff, Brown served as an assistant coach for two years at Idaho State. In Brown’s two years with the Bengals, he helped the team win 25 games while advancing to the Big Sky Tournament semifinals both seasons.
Brown played collegiately at Providence College while Herrion was an assistant for the Friars. Brown was a two-time captain and four-year letterwinner for Providence, and was a big part of the 1994 squad that won the Big East championship. His 104 career starts rank fourth on the Friars’ all-time charts, while his 1,163 points place him 21st. Brown also contributed 359 assists during his four years, 12th most in Providence history. As a senior, Brown was named the team’s Jimmy Walker Most Valuable Player and the Marvin Barnes Defensive Player of the Year. In addition, he received the college’s most prestigious athletic award, the Mal Brown Award, which is given to the Providence senior athlete who best personifies the ideals of sportsmanship, courage and honor. Brown, a native of central New York, graduated in 1996 with a degree in accountancy.
Brown took to the professional courts in England from 1996-2004, most notably with the Brighton Bears of the British Basketball League for five years (1999-04). In his final season with the Bears, he helped them to a 30-6 record and the BBL championship. From 2004-06, Brown played for AGE Halkidas in Greece where he earned All-Bosman team honors.
Herrion has chosen John Janovsky to become a graduate manager. Janovsky comes to MU from Duquesne where he was the Coordinator of Basketball Operations. His duties at Duquesne included film exchange, film breakdown, team travel, and served as the liaison between men’s basketball and compliance offices. Janovsky moved to Duquesne from Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he was an assistant coach from 2006-2009. Janovsky assisted in all phases of all the men’s basketball program and helped the program earn 22 victories and a berth in the 2009 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Janovsky began his coaching career at St. Lawrence University (2005-06) where he was part of the 2006 Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year. From October of 2004 to June 2005, Janovsky was the Coordinator of Business Operations for the Huntsville Flight of the NBDL. A 2004 University of Pittsburgh graduate, Janovsky was a student assistant and a team manager for the Panthers’ men’s basketball program.
"Mike played for me at Providence,” Herrion said. “He had an outstanding career and was tremendous overachiever. After a long professional career in Europe he decided to get into coaching and after a few years as an assistant he is a welcomed addition to our staff as our director of Operations. I really am excited to have Mike on board, I believe he will be a great resource for me and more importantly for our players, he has accomplished many things in his playing career that our guys hope to attain. Mike is a high character individual and we are thrilled he is in the Herd family."
"John is a rising star and has a tremendously bright future,” said Herrion. “John's experience having been in the Pitt program as a student and his time spent as an assistant coach for some outstanding coaches is a welcomed addition. John will be valuable in so many areas, especially as our video coordinator. I have gotten to know John the past few years and I am really excited to have him on staff."
