WMUL Students Receive Seven Awards In Communicator Audio Competition

Huntington, WV (HNN) – Students from WMUL-FM, Marshall University’s public radio station, received two Awards of Excellence and five Awards of Distinction in the 16th annual Communicator Awards 2010 Audio Competition announced earlier this month.
 
The Communicator Awards come from the International Academy of Visual Arts that recognizes outstanding work in the communications field. Entries are judged by industry professionals who seek out companies and individuals whose talent exceeds a high standard of excellence and whose work serves as a benchmark for the industry. The 2010 contest had more than 7,000 entries.
 
The Award of Excellence winning entries by WMUL-FM were in the following categories:
News program
 
“The 5:00 p.m. Edition of Newscenter 88,” broadcast Friday, Oct. 23, 2009. Participating students were Delaney McLemore, sophomore, Philomath, Ore., producer; Adam Cavalier, graduate student, Montgomery, news anchor; Leannda Carey, junior, Wellsburg, news anchor; and Kenneth Cox, senior, Glen White, sports anchor.

The Award of Distinction winning entries by WMUL-FM were in the following categories:
News program
 
“The 5:00 p.m. Edition of Newscenter 88,” broadcast Friday, April 3, 2009. The students who participated in the newscast, which also was made available online, were Robert Iddings, senior, St. Albans, producer; Adam Cavalier, news anchor; Whitney Thomas, senior, Wheeling, news anchor; Robert Iddings, sports anchor.
 
Feature package
 
“The Legend of Dr. Kim,” written and produced by Adam Cavalier, broadcast during the “5:00 p.m. Edition of Newscenter 88” Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009.
 
Sports program
 
“Herd Roundup,” broadcast and made available online Friday, Oct. 23, 2009. The students who participated in “Herd Roundup” were Adam Cavalier, co-host and producer, and Robert Iddings, co-host and producer.
 
Documentary script
 
The script for the documentary program “Failing Infrastructure: Saving Huntington’s Sewage System,” was written by Adam Cavalier. The documentary script was completed Monday, May 4, 2009.
 
On-air talent/talk show host
 
“The Sowards-Roudebush Report” with its hosts Matt Sowards, a recent graduate from Salt Rock, and Jay Roudebush, a graduate student from Charleston, is a political debate-styled talk program. The winning program focused on healthcare and featured special guest Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va. The program was broadcast Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009.
“I am proud and grateful for the honor these Communicator Awards of Excellence bestow on WMUL-FM, the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications, and Marshall University,” said Dr. Chuck G. Bailey, professor of radio-television production and management in the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Marshall University and faculty manager of WMUL-FM.
 
With the addition of these seven awards, the WMUL-FM student broadcasters have won 83 awards for the 2009-2010 academic year.
 
Winners of the Communicator Awards come from radio stations, production facilities, advertising and public relations agencies, corporate communications departments, government entities, technicians, narrators, writers, and other professionals associated with the production of audio broadcasts and materials.
