Special to Huntingtonnews.net
Huntington, WV (HNN) – Marshall University students in art and design will participate in “An Evening of Art History” Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 5:30 p.m. in room 349 of the Drinko Library on Marshall’s Huntington campus. The event is also free and is open to the public, according to College of Fine Arts officials.
“We want our students to understand that thinking and writing articulately and critically about art is just as important as making art,” Susan Jackson, professor of art and design, said. “Art is an intellectual activity.”
Three presentations will be made by Marshall faculty members in order to give students an idea of what presentations at art history conferences are like. Jackson will present “There’s Something About Mary Magdalene: Some Questions Concerning Her Cult.” Dr. Beverly Twitchell Marchant, also a professor of art and design, will present ““What You See is Who I Am: Native Jewelry and Identity in the Southwest.” Adjunct professor Cory Pillen will present “Make Your Health Points: WPA Posters and Public Health Education.”
In addition, the event will kick off an essay competition in art history and criticism for Marshall students. Students in Art and Design who have written research papers for art courses in calendar year 2009 are encouraged to submit their written work for inclusion in a future evening of student presentations on art history. Cash prizes for the best essays will be awarded.
Deadline for entries in the competition is noon Friday, Feb. 26. For further information, students should contact Jackson by e-mail at jacksons@marshall.edu or by phone at 304-696-2896.
