A 40-year-old Huntington man was arrested Monday on a charge of fourth degree arson, a felony, after he set his shopping cart and personal belongings on fire near a Ritter Park picnic shelter.
After the man was taken to Huntington police headquarters, he was combative and twice kicked an officer in the shins.
Arrested was Jeffrey L. Phillips of 4509 River Ave. He also was charged with public intoxication and battery of a police officer.
Other news from the Huntington Police Department Tuesday:
----- A 22-year-old Huntington man reported he was assaulted by his ex-girlfriend and her mother in the 2400 block of First Avenue about 7:10 p.m. Monday.
The man said his ex-girlfriend pushed him five to six times and her mother punched him in the left eye.
----- An 11-year-old Huntington boy was charged with battery after he hit a 13-year-old boy in the face and head at West Middle School, 1001 Jefferson Ave., about noon Monday.
The 11-year-old boy accused the other of talking about members of his family. The other boy hit the 11-year-old back.
----- Three teenage boys were arrested in connection to a stolen car Monday evening.
A 1996 Mercury Sable was stolen from in front of Speedway, 1538 Madison Ave., when the driver left the car running as he ran inside the store.
A 16-year-old Huntington boy was charged with transferring/receiving stolen property and driving without a license. Two 17-year-old Huntington boys were charged with joyriding.
----- A Huntington woman reported her husband held her down and choked her and punched her on top of the head several times in the 2200 block of West Fifth Avenue about 9:25 p.m. Monday.
While the officers were talking to the woman, the husband fled on foot. An offier chased him for two blocks until the man stopped. At police headquarters, the man cut his neck with a Copenhagen lid.
Arrested was William L. Bartram of 2202 W. Fifth Ave. #3. He also was charged with fleeing.
----- A 20-year-old Huntington woman reported Monday she has been stalked by a man since June. The man wants a romantic relationship, which she doesn't want. On Sunday, he slipped a threatening note under her front door.
----- A wallet containing $85, credit cards, IDs and other items was stolen from Foodland, 459 Camden Road, between 11 a.m. Saturday and 11:30 a.m. Sunday, a 58-year-old Huntington woman reported.
The woman said someone used her Sears credit card at the Huntington Mall Saturday and Sunday to charge $250 worth of purchases.
----- A CD player and computer equipment were stolen from West Middle School, 1001 Jefferson Ave., between 9 p.m. Friday and 5:40 a.m. Monday.
----- A large rock was used to break out the rear window of a 1998 Accura parked in the 100 block of North Boulevard between 9:30 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. Monday, a 25-year-old Huntington man reported.
----- The passenger side window of a 1996 Ford F-250 was shattered while parked at S&S Firestone, 560 27th St., between 8 p.m. Friday and 7:50 a.m. Monday. Someone gained entry into a fenced parking lot to do it.
----- A temporary tag, title and driver's license were stolen from a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire in the 200 block of 25th St. between 12:15 and 1:30 a.m. Sunday, a 25-year-old Huntington woman reported.
----- A purse and bag of fruit were stolen from a 1999 Nissan Maxima parked at Bob Evans, 606 Third Ave., between noon and 1 p.m. Monday.
----- A debit card was stolen from a home in the 4200 block of Piedmont Road between 1:30 a.m. and noon Monday.
----- A 1996 Chevy Blazer was stolen from a parking lot in the 800 block of Fifth Avenue between 1 and 3 p.m. Monday, a 21-year-old South Point woman reported.
----- A wallet containing a paycheck for $1,600, credit cards, $20 and some other items was stolen from the 1200 block of Charleston Avenue about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, a 26-year-old Milton man reported.
----- A TV, drill, two socket sets and a tool box with tools were stolen from a garage in the 2900 block of Staunton Road between 11 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. Monday, a 36-year-old Huntington man reported.
----- A thief broke into Second Presbyterian Chruch, 901 Jefferson Ave., and stole several tools between noon Sunday and 1:30 p.m. Monday. Other items were to be inventoried.
----- A man threw a cinder block at a 2003 Chrysler Sebring in the 900 block of Hal Greer Boulevard about 5:30 p.m. Monday, a 46-year-old Barboursville woman reported.
The cinder block hit the passenger side front fender. The woman said the man appeared to be heavily intoxicated and staggered north toward Eighth Avenue.
About an hour later, a man matching the description of the man who threw the cinder block was arrested on a charge of public intoxication in the 1600 block of Eighth Avenue. His name was Oscar S. Waiters Jr., 40, of 1357 Park St. Apt. 5.
