Letter to the Editor

I been reading a lot lately on President Bush’s visit to Iraq to have Thanksgiving dinner with the soldiers in Baghdad.  I watched on TV too.  I think it would be more accurate to call it a Thanksgiving Breakfast.

I may be an old country woman, but if you look at the local time that Bush arrived in Baghdad and the time he had his breakfast/dinner with those soldiers, you might draw some conclusions that it might have been a set up event.  Kind of like the Huntington city council’s investigation into the streetlights that HURA bought.

According to the news reports, Bush landed in Baghdad at around 6:00 a.m.   He left at 7:50 a.m.  So he ate Thanksgiving dinner between those two times.  And I’m not even counting the travel time to and from the airport to the mess hall where he ate.

So much for spending Thanksgiving with the troops.  I guess he needed to get back to Laura.  And there’s nothing wrong with that.  Except, I would be a little disappointed in my husband Moe, if that’s all the time he could spare with the folks that were putting their lives on the line on account of decisions Moe made.

I might be a hick, but that doesn’t make me stupid.  I don't eat Thanksgiving dinner at 6:30 a.m.  If Bush wanted to go to Iraq, let him go.  I’m glad he wants to go there.  But don't wake up a lot of soldiers who would rather be asleep so that you can make a big show out of the trip.

Maybe if Bush had been a real pilot instead of being AWOL for much of his military career, he would have had more respect for his soldiers and sailors.  I can see now why he didn’t want to spend too much time in a military situation.  It’s easy playing Army when you have plenty of protection.
